Ingredients:

For the Dumplings:

  • 4 large baking apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 package (2 sheets) of refrigerated pie crusts or homemade pie crust
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup water

For the Sauce:

  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Apples:
    • Peel and core the apples. Cut each apple into quarters.
    • Roll out the pie crusts on a lightly floured surface. Cut each crust into four squares.
  3. Wrap the Apples:
    • Place an apple quarter on each square of pie crust.
    • In a small bowl, mix together sugar and cinnamon. Sprinkle the sugar-cinnamon mixture over each apple quarter.
    • Fold the corners of the pie crust over the apple, sealing the edges. Place the wrapped apples in a greased baking dish.
  4. Prepare the Sauce:
    • In a saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and add vanilla extract.
  5. Pour Sauce Over Dumplings:
    • Pour the sauce evenly over the wrapped apples in the baking dish.
  6. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes or until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender.
  7. Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. You can spoon some of the sauce from the pan over each serving.
  8. Optional Toppings:
    • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
