Texas Sheet Cake Recipe – Step by Step Guide

This Texas Sheet Cake recipe is the best one I’ve ever found. It comes from my wonderful mother-in-law. I’ve had a few sheet cakes before, but this one is by far the best! His best recipe is for Texas sheet cake, and everyone in my family loves it too.

Ingredients

  •  1 cup water
  •  1 cup butter
  •  3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  •  2 cups all-purpose flour
  •  2 cups granulated sugar
  •  1 teaspoon baking soda
  •  1/2 teaspoon salt
  •  1/2 cup sour cream
  •  2 large eggs
  •  1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Frosting

  •  6 Tablespoons milk
  • 3 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  •  1/2 cup butter
  •  3 3/4 cups powdered sugar

How to make it 

  • Warm the oven up to 350 degrees F and grease a pan that is 18×13 inches. While the pan is still hot, add the water butter cocoa powder. Bring the mix to a boil.
  • At the same time, mix the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt in a different bowl. The sour cream, eggs, and vanilla should all be mixed together in a different small bowl.
  • Mix the sour cream and eggs together before adding them to the flour mixture. When the chocolate mix in the pot starts to boil, take it off the heat and pour it into the batter. Blend until there are no more lumps.
  • Pour the liquid into the pan that has been prepared. Use a spatula to make sure it is spread out evenly.
  • Place in an oven that has already been warm and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the center is set. Get the filling ready around the middle of the cake’s cooking time.

To frost the chocolate sheet cake: 

  • Put butter, milk, and cocoa in a pot. Bring the mix to a boil. Take it off the heat when it starts to boil and stir in the powdered sugar. To get rid of any lumps, I like to use my hand-held mixer to beat the bowl.
